  National Youth Day 2021: History and significance of the day National Youth Day is observed every year on January 12 to honour the teachings and ideals of Swami Vivekananda. Born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, Swami Vivekananda was a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna and was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the western world. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. Since 1984, January 12 is observed as National Youth Day across the country. While taking the decision to mark Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary as the National Youth Day, the government said, “the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian youth.” The day is marked all over India at schools and colleges, with processions, speeches, music, youth conventions, seminars, Yogasanas, presentations, competitions in essay-writing, recitations

  Step up action and adapt to 'new climate reality', UN environment report urges According to the 2020  Adaptation Gap Report , released on Thursday by the UN Environment Programme ( UNEP ), as temperatures rise and climate change impacts intensify, nations must urgently step up action to adapt to the new climate reality or face serious costs, damages and losses.  “The hard truth is that climate change is upon us,” Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director, said in a  news release  announcing the findings.  “Its impacts will intensify and hit vulnerable countries and communities the hardest, even if we meet the  Paris Agreement  goals of holding global warming this century to well below 2 degrees Celsius and pursuing 1.5 degree Celsius.”  Global commitment needed  Annual adaptation costs in developing countries are estimated at $70 billion, but the figure could reach up to $300 billion in 2030, and $500 billion in 2050. More than a quarter of countries still don’t have a single national-level adaptation plan, and financing for adaptation measures falls far short of what is needed. By mid-century, adaptation costs could total up to $500 billion for developing countries, which will be disproportionately impacted by climate change despite contributing least to it. Less than 5% of adaptation projects have yielded any real benefits in terms of boosting resilience to date, according to a survey of 1,700 projects cited in the report.
